Well. there is more than one sort of style. Perhaps show a picture and maybe I can help more.
How bout you be yourself and stop fallowing some label.
black hair. razor cut bangs covering right eyes. straighten and put in red streaks. now thats sexy
im not a big fan of scene hair, but i know that you have to grow it out a little, use only shampoo and no products, then straighten it and tease it.

I do:) if you need help like telling ur friend or the hair stylyst what to do to your hair to get it exactly right its hard and it took me ages to get it right but mainly just say u want a point cut to your bangs..and you want the back shorter and to fade into the front ..and use a razor comb and give me layers thruout it pretty much wrks
Well a side fringe helps, just straighten your hair downwards and use gel/wax and die random strands of colour into it
